The Complete Guide to AI Agents for Social Media (2026)

AI agents can now do more than write your posts: connected to a social media MCP server, they can check each network's rules, attach your media and schedule the post to your real accounts, all from one conversation or one task. This guide explains how that works with PostAxis, which agents you can use, how to pick one and how to automate without anything going out that you did not mean to post. It is for founders, marketers and developers who already use an AI assistant and want it to handle the publishing part too.

What changed: agents that can actually post

For a long time the workflow looked like this: ask an assistant for a caption, copy it, open a scheduler, paste it, fix the length for X, find the image, pick a time, repeat for LinkedIn. The assistant did the easy part and you did the clicking.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) removes the copy and paste. It is an open standard that lets an AI agent call tools on an outside service during a conversation. When the service is a social media scheduler, the agent can ask which accounts you have, write a version per network, check those versions against each network's limits and save them to your calendar. You still decide what goes out. You just stop being the courier between two windows.

How it works: agent, MCP server, networks

There are three pieces.

  1. The agent. ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Codex, n8n, whatever you already use. It reads your request and decides which tools to call.
  2. The MCP server. PostAxis runs a remote MCP server at https://postaxis.io/api/mcp over Streamable HTTP. The agent connects to it once and from then on sees the PostAxis tools next to its own.
  3. The networks. Your social accounts stay connected inside PostAxis: Instagram (professional accounts), TikTok, YouTube (Shorts), X, LinkedIn, Facebook (Pages only), Threads and Telegram (channels). PostAxis does the actual publishing at the scheduled time.

A typical request flows like this:

You: "Announce the CSV export on X and LinkedIn tomorrow at 9:00 Europe/Berlin."
Agent → list_accounts (which X and LinkedIn accounts exist?)
Agent  →  get_platform_rules       (X is 280 characters, LinkedIn 3,000)
Agent → create_post (one post, a caption per account, scheduled)
PostAxis checks every caption and media rule, saves the post, shows it in the calendar
At 9:00 PostAxis publishes to both accounts

The important detail: the agent never touches your social media passwords. It only holds a token for PostAxis, and PostAxis holds the connections to the networks.

OAuth vs API key: two ways to sign in

Every agent connects to the same server. What differs is how it proves it is allowed to act for you.

OAuth (most agents). You paste the MCP URL, the agent opens a PostAxis sign-in page, you click Approve, done. PostAxis supports OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, so there is no client ID to create and nothing to copy. OAuth access is included in every PostAxis plan. Chat apps like ChatGPT, Claude and Le Chat use it through their connector settings; coding agents like Cursor, Windsurf or Cline use it through a small config entry that points at the URL.

API key (some agents). A few tools cannot run an OAuth flow, so they send a key instead, either as an Authorization: Bearer KEY header or, for clients that only accept a URL, as ?key= on the end of the MCP URL. Keys are created in PostAxis under Settings → API keys and need the API add-on. Grok, LM Studio, Manus and n8n use this method.

Either way, you can cut access at any time. Connected OAuth agents are listed under Settings → API keys → Connected agents, and revoking one (or deleting a key) takes effect immediately.

The 11 PostAxis tools

Once connected, the agent sees these tools. You never call them yourself; you ask in plain language and the agent picks.

ToolWhat it does
list_workspacesLists your PostAxis workspaces
list_accountsLists connected social accounts per workspace
get_platform_rulesReturns caption limits and media rules per network
upload_media_from_urlPulls an image or video from a public URL into your media library
create_upload_linkReturns a one-time link for uploading a local file
create_postDrafts, schedules or publishes one post
create_posts_bulkSchedules up to 50 posts in one call
list_postsLists posts by status or date range
get_postReturns one post with its per-network status
update_postEdits text, media or time before it goes out
delete_postRemoves a draft or scheduled post

A few behaviours worth knowing:

  • One post, many accounts. A single post can target several accounts, with a different caption per account. Media is shared by the whole post.
  • Validate before saving. create_posts_bulk accepts validate_only=true, which checks every post and saves nothing. This is the single most useful habit in this guide.
  • Bulk is for scheduling. publish="now" is not allowed in bulk calls. Posting right away happens one post at a time with create_post.
  • Limits. Up to 300 posts per 24 hours per account through MCP, and up to 50 posts per bulk call.
  • No generated media. PostAxis does not create images or videos. The agent attaches media you already have.

Network rules every agent works within

PostAxis checks each post against the network's rules before saving it. If a caption is too long or the media does not fit, the post is rejected with an error that says what to change, and the agent can fix it and try again.

NetworkCaption limitMedia rules
X (Twitter)280Optional; up to 4 images or a video
Threads500Optional; up to 10 images or a video
LinkedIn3,000Optional; up to 9 images or a video
Telegram4,096 (1,024 with media)Optional; up to 10 images or a video
Facebook63,206Pages only; up to 10 images or a video
Instagram2,200Required: 1–10 images or one video (Reel); professional account
TikTok2,200Required: video or up to 35 JPEG/WebP photos; first 150 characters become the title
YouTube5,000Exactly one video (Shorts); title up to 100 characters

Video files must be MP4 or MOV, 3–300 seconds long, in 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4 or 1:1. One video per post, and images and video cannot be mixed.

How to choose an agent

The honest answer: use the one you already open every day. All 24 agents below talk to the same server and get the same 11 tools. What changes is where you work and what kind of job the agent is good at.

Chat assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Le Chat, Grok, LM Studio) are best for writing and planning. You talk through an idea, see drafts, ask for changes and schedule when you are happy. Good for marketers and founders who think in conversations.

Coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, VS Code Copilot, Cline, Roo Code, Kiro, opencode, Amp) live next to your code. They can read a diff, a changelog or a release tag and turn it into launch posts without you explaining what shipped. Good for developers and small product teams.

Autonomous agents (Claude Cowork, Manus, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, Goose) work through longer, multi-step tasks. Point them at a folder of notes or a launch doc and they can build and schedule a whole content calendar. Good when the job is "fill the month", not "write one post".

Automation tools (n8n, Dify, any MCP client) run on triggers. A new blog post, a form submission or a product event can kick off an agent that drafts and schedules posts with no chat at all. Good for repeatable pipelines.

"OAuth via config" means you add the MCP URL to the agent's config file or MCP settings, and the agent opens the PostAxis sign-in the first time it connects.

Setting up any agent in four steps

The details differ per agent (each guide above has exact menu paths and config snippets), but the shape is always the same.

  1. Create a PostAxis account at app.postaxis.io. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial and includes MCP access with OAuth sign-in.
  2. Connect your social accounts under Accounts in PostAxis. The agent can only post to accounts connected here.
  3. Add the MCP server to your agent. In a chat app that means a custom connector with the URL below. In a coding agent it usually means a config entry.
https://postaxis.io/api/mcp
  1. Sign in and test. Approve access on the PostAxis page that opens, then ask the agent "Which accounts can you post to?" If it lists your accounts, everything works.

For a config-based agent the entry often looks something like this (the exact file name and key differ per tool, so follow that agent's guide):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "postaxis": {
      "url": "https://postaxis.io/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Safe automation: how to stay in control

Handing an agent the ability to post sounds risky until you see how many checkpoints there are. Use all of them.

Validate first

For any batch, ask the agent to run create_posts_bulk with validate_only=true and show you the result. PostAxis checks every caption, image count and video rule and saves nothing. You see the whole plan, the agent fixes anything flagged, and only then does it schedule for real. A simple line in your prompt does it: "validate first, show me the list, wait for my OK."

Use drafts for anything you want to read twice

create_post can save a draft instead of scheduling. Drafts show up under Drafts in the PostAxis dashboard, where you or a teammate can edit and schedule them by hand. This is a good default for anything touching pricing, legal wording or a sensitive topic.

Let the agent ask before it writes

Most chat agents (ChatGPT, Claude, Le Chat) show each tool call and ask before running ones that create, change or delete posts. Coding agents usually have an approval setting for tool calls. Keep approvals on for write actions, at least until you trust your prompts.

Always say the timezone

"Tomorrow at 9" means different things to you, the agent and a server in UTC. Write "9:00 Europe/Berlin" or "18:00 America/New_York" and the problem disappears.

Check the calendar

Everything an agent creates appears in the PostAxis calendar at app.postaxis.io/calendar. A quick look before the week starts catches anything odd, and you can edit or delete any post there. You can also ask the agent: "What goes out this week?" uses list_posts and gives you a readable summary.

Know how to revoke

If an agent misbehaves or you stop using it, open Settings → API keys in PostAxis and revoke it under Connected agents, or delete its API key. It loses access immediately and your social accounts are not affected.

Keep a human on anything that publishes now

Scheduling gives you a buffer to catch mistakes. Publishing immediately does not. Reserve "post now" for things like an outage all-clear, and keep those short.

What agents are good at (and what to keep for yourself)

Agents are strong at the repetitive middle of social media work: adapting one announcement into a short X version, a longer LinkedIn version and a Telegram post with the full details; spreading a set of posts across a week; rescheduling everything that landed on a holiday; reporting which posts failed and putting them back in the queue.

Keep the judgement for yourself. Decide what you want to say, which launches matter and what tone fits your audience. Write that down once (as custom instructions, a project file or a short brand note you paste in) and the agent will follow it far more consistently than if you explain it every time.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The agent says no accounts are connected. Connect at least one social account under Accounts in PostAxis. If you use several workspaces, tell the agent which one, for example "use my Acme workspace".
  • 401 Unauthorized or "sign in again". The sign-in expired or was revoked. Reconnect from your agent so it opens the PostAxis sign-in again. With an API key, check the key is still active under Settings → API keys.
  • A post was rejected before saving. PostAxis checks caption length, media count, video length and format first. The error says what to change; ask the agent to fix it and retry.
  • Posts are scheduled at the wrong time. Put the timezone in the request. Without one, the agent uses the timezone it was told or UTC.
  • You want an agent to stop posting. Revoke it under Settings → API keys → Connected agents, or revoke its key. Access ends immediately.

FAQ

What is a social media MCP server?

It is a server that exposes social media actions (list accounts, upload media, create and schedule posts) as tools an AI agent can call over the Model Context Protocol. The PostAxis MCP server lives at https://postaxis.io/api/mcp and gives agents 11 tools for working with your PostAxis calendar.

Can an AI agent post to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube?

Yes, as long as you supply the media. Instagram needs 1 to 10 images or one video and a professional account, TikTok needs a video or JPEG/WebP photos, and YouTube Shorts needs exactly one video. PostAxis does not generate images or video; the agent attaches files from a public URL or through a one-time upload link.

Does the agent see my social media passwords?

No. The agent signs in to PostAxis (with OAuth or an API key) and only gets access to PostAxis. Your social accounts are connected inside PostAxis, and their credentials never reach the agent.

How much does it cost?

MCP access with OAuth is included in every PostAxis plan, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Agents that sign in with an API key (such as n8n or Manus) need the API add-on. The agent itself may have its own plan requirements, for example for custom connectors.

Can an agent schedule a whole month at once?

Yes. create_posts_bulk takes up to 50 posts per call, so a 30-day calendar fits in one call. Ask the agent to validate first so you can review the plan before anything is saved. The limit is 300 posts per 24 hours per account through MCP.

Which agent is best for social media?

The one that fits where you already work. Chat assistants suit writing and planning, coding agents suit release announcements, autonomous agents suit long calendar-building tasks, and automation tools suit trigger-based pipelines. They all use the same PostAxis tools.
