Automate Social Media Posts with Cline and an MCP Server

Cline can turn the change it just made into social posts and schedule them, without you leaving VS Code. You add PostAxis under Remote Servers in Cline's MCP panel, approve the sign-in once, and from then on Cline can draft, schedule and publish posts to the accounts you connected in PostAxis. This guide is for developers who use Cline daily and want announcements to be part of shipping, not a chore after it.

Cline is a good fit for this because of how it handles approval. By default it asks before every tool call and shows you exactly what it is about to send. You decide which PostAxis tools run on their own and which always wait for your click.

What you can automate with Cline

  • Branch summaries. Cline reads the commits on the current branch and writes an X post about what changed, ready for the evening.
  • Changelog posts. It turns a CHANGELOG.md section into posts for X and LinkedIn, or the full notes for a Telegram channel.
  • Plan-then-post releases. Use Plan mode to agree on the angle and the copy, then switch to Act mode and let Cline schedule it.
  • Safe read-only checks. Auto-approve the tools that only read, so "what's scheduled this week?" answers instantly.
  • Queue repairs. Cline finds scheduled posts that break a network's rules and fixes them, asking you before each edit.

What you need

  • A PostAxis account. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial and includes MCP access with OAuth sign-in.
  • Social accounts connected under Accounts in PostAxis (X, LinkedIn, Threads, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or Facebook Pages).
  • Cline installed in VS Code, with a model configured.
  • Optional: the PostAxis API add-on, only if your Cline version doesn't offer the OAuth sign-in and you need to fall back to an API key.

How to connect Cline to PostAxis (step by step)

  1. Create your PostAxis account. Sign up at app.postaxis.io. The 7-day trial includes MCP access.
  2. Connect your social accounts. In PostAxis, open Accounts and connect the networks you want. Cline can only post to accounts connected here and never sees your social media passwords.
  3. Open MCP Servers. In the Cline panel in VS Code, click the MCP Servers icon and open the Remote Servers tab.
  4. Add PostAxis. Enter postaxis as the server name, paste the URL below and click Add Server.
https://postaxis.io/api/mcp
  1. Sign in. If Cline shows an Authenticate button next to PostAxis, click it and approve in your browser.
  2. Check the tools. PostAxis should show a green dot and 11 tools under Installed.
  3. Check it works. In the Cline chat, ask:
Which accounts can you post to?

Cline asks to run list_accounts. Approve it and you should see your connected profiles.

Set up approvals before you start posting

This is the part worth five minutes. In Cline's MCP settings you can mark individual tools as auto-approved. A sensible split:

Auto-approve (read only)Keep manual (changes posts)
list_workspacescreate_post
list_accountscreate_posts_bulk
get_platform_rulesupdate_post
list_postsdelete_post
get_postupload_media_from_url, create_upload_link

With this split, Cline can look things up freely, but anything that creates, edits or removes a post waits for you. When the approval prompt appears, read the caption and the scheduled time in the tool arguments. That is your final review.

5 workflows you can copy

Plan the announcement, then let Cline act

Cline's Plan mode is for talking things through without touching anything. Use it to settle the message first.

In Plan mode:

I just finished the rate-limit dashboard on this branch. Read the diff and propose
an X post and a LinkedIn post announcing it. Audience: backend developers using our API.
Plain tone, no hashtags, no exclamation marks. Don't post anything yet.

Once the copy reads right, switch to Act mode:

Good. Schedule both for tomorrow at 09:30 America/Chicago.

In Act mode Cline calls list_accounts, get_platform_rules, then create_post with a separate caption for each account. You approve the create_post call and it replies with the scheduled time and post ID.

Summarise a branch as an X post

For small changes that still deserve a mention, this is the quickest loop.

Summarise the changes in this branch as an X post for our users.
Mention the single most useful change first. Schedule it for 18:00 Europe/Amsterdam today.

Cline reads the commits, writes the copy and asks to run create_post. You get something like: "Scheduled an X post for 18:00 today (204 characters) covering the three changes on this branch."

Post the changelog to Telegram now

Telegram channels are a good home for full release notes, since a text post can run up to 4,096 characters.

Read the latest section of CHANGELOG.md and post it to our Telegram channel now.
Keep the headings, turn bullet points into short lines, and end with the link
https://example.com/releases. No images.

Cline calls get_platform_rules to confirm the Telegram limit, then create_post with immediate publishing. Leaving out images matters here: with media attached, the Telegram caption limit drops to 1,024 characters.

Write a LinkedIn post and keep it as a draft

LinkedIn posts usually need a human pass. Let Cline do the first draft.

Write a LinkedIn post about this release for engineering leads: what problem it solves,
what changed, and one concrete example. 150 to 250 words. Save it as a draft in PostAxis.

Cline calls create_post with draft status. Open Drafts in PostAxis to edit and schedule it when you're happy.

Fix scheduled posts that would fail

Run this before a week with several releases.

List my scheduled posts for the next 7 days. Check each against the rules for its
networks and fix any that would fail on Instagram or X. Ask me before each change.

With the approval split above, Cline runs list_posts, get_post and get_platform_rules without stopping, then asks before each update_post. If an Instagram post has no media, Cline should flag it rather than invent an image, because PostAxis does not generate images or video.

Network limits Cline works within

NetworkCaption limitMedia rules
X (Twitter)280 charactersText-only allowed; up to 4 images or one video
LinkedIn3,000 charactersText-only allowed; up to 9 images or one video
Telegram4,096 characters (1,024 with media)Text-only allowed; up to 10 images or one video
Instagram2,200 charactersMedia required: 1 to 10 images or one video (Reel); professional accounts only

PostAxis checks each post against these rules before it is saved. A caption that is too long, a missing image or a video in the wrong format is rejected with an error that explains the problem, and Cline can read it and retry. This way a mistake shows up in your chat, not as a failed post at 9 a.m.

Tips for better posts

  • Write your voice into .clinerules. Cline reads project rules from .clinerules in your repository. Add a short "Announcements" section: audience, tone, banned phrases, your docs URL, your default timezone.
  • Use Plan mode for anything public. Agreeing on the copy before Act mode means the approval prompt is a quick check, not a rewrite.
  • Validate bulk schedules first. For a launch week, ask Cline to call create_posts_bulk with validate_only set to true. It checks up to 50 posts and saves nothing.
  • Say the timezone every time. "09:30 America/Chicago" leaves no room for guessing.
  • Default to drafts on new accounts. Until you trust the output, have Cline save drafts and schedule them yourself in the PostAxis calendar.
  • Don't auto-approve writes. It is tempting after a few good runs. Keep create_post and delete_post manual.

Troubleshooting

Cline doesn't offer a sign-in. Open cline_mcp_settings.json (from the MCP Servers panel) and add an Authorization header to the postaxis entry. Keep any other fields Cline already wrote there. API keys need the API add-on and are created under Settings → API keys.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "postaxis": {
      "url": "https://postaxis.io/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

PostAxis shows a red dot. Check the URL, then restart the server from the MCP panel. If you use an API key, make sure it is still active under Settings → API keys.

401 Unauthorized or "sign in again". The sign-in expired or was revoked. Click Authenticate again, or check your API key.

Cline says no accounts are connected. Connect an account under Accounts in PostAxis. With several workspaces, tell Cline which one to use.

Posts are scheduled at the wrong time. Include the timezone in the request. Without one, the agent uses the timezone it was told or UTC.

FAQ

Can Cline post to social media?

Yes. With PostAxis added as a remote MCP server, Cline can draft, schedule and publish posts to X, LinkedIn, Threads, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Pages connected in your PostAxis account.

Does Cline ask before posting?

Yes. Cline asks you to approve each tool call unless you turn on auto-approve for specific PostAxis tools. A good default is auto-approving read-only tools and keeping manual approval for anything that creates, edits or deletes posts.

Is the Cline MCP integration free?

Cline is open source. On the PostAxis side, MCP access with OAuth is included in every plan, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. API keys need the API add-on.

Does Cline see my social media passwords?

No. You connect social accounts inside PostAxis. Cline only gets PostAxis access through OAuth (or an API key you create), and you can revoke it anytime under Settings → API keys.

Can Cline write a different post for each network?

Yes. Name the networks in one request and Cline sends one post with a caption per account: short for X, longer for LinkedIn, the full notes for Telegram. PostAxis rejects any version that breaks its network's limits before saving.

Add the remote server, set up your approval split, and ask Cline to draft a post about the branch you're on. The Cline agent page has the setup at a glance, the MCP reference covers all 11 tools, and the complete guide to AI agents for social media compares Cline with other agents.
