How to Automate Social Media with Hermes Agent (MCP Setup)

Hermes Agent can schedule and manage your social media once you add the PostAxis MCP server to its config: paste one block, sign in with OAuth, and all 11 PostAxis tools show up, from account lookup to bulk scheduling. It takes about two minutes.

This guide is for people running Hermes Agent, the open-source autonomous agent from Nous Research, who want it to handle real posting work instead of handing them text to copy.

What you can automate with Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent takes a goal and works through it step by step with the tools you give it. Add PostAxis and "post about this" becomes a goal it can finish on its own. Good fits:

  • Daily series. A product tip on Threads every day at noon for the next two weeks, written and scheduled in one run.
  • Article to drafts. Turn a long blog post into three LinkedIn drafts your team reviews before anything is scheduled.
  • Research-led posting. Find this week's relevant news and schedule a short take on each.
  • Photos you already have. Hand it a link to today's product shot and get it on Instagram and Threads tonight with a tight caption.
  • Housekeeping. Find what failed to publish this week and fix or reschedule it.

Because Hermes is open source and you control where it runs, it's a natural fit for people who want a self-hosted agent but a managed scheduler that handles the network APIs, token refreshes and publishing.

What you need

  • A PostAxis account. Sign up at app.postaxis.io; every plan includes MCP access and a 7-day free trial.
  • Social accounts connected in PostAxis under Accounts.
  • Hermes Agent installed and running, with a model that handles tool calls well.
  • A browser on the same machine for the one-time OAuth sign-in. No API add-on needed.

How to connect Hermes Agent to PostAxis (step by step)

  1. Create your PostAxis account. Sign up at app.postaxis.io. OAuth sign-in for agents is included on every plan.
  2. Connect your social accounts. Open Accounts in PostAxis and connect the networks you want: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads or Telegram. Hermes can only post to accounts connected here and never sees your social media passwords.
  3. Open the MCP settings. Open the file or screen where Hermes Agent lists its MCP servers. The exact location and format depend on your Hermes version, so check its docs if you're unsure.
  4. Add the PostAxis block. Paste this. If an mcpServers list already exists, add only the postaxis entry inside it.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "postaxis": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://postaxis.io/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

If your Hermes config uses a different file format, keep the same two settings: an HTTP server type and the URL https://postaxis.io/api/mcp. PostAxis speaks Streamable HTTP and is stateless, so there's nothing else to configure.

  1. Sign in. Restart Hermes. When the OAuth prompt appears, sign in to PostAxis and approve.
  2. Check it works. Ask:
Which PostAxis accounts are connected?

Hermes should list your accounts. All 11 tools are now available: list_workspaces, list_accounts, get_platform_rules, upload_media_from_url, create_upload_link, create_post, create_posts_bulk, list_posts, get_post, update_post and delete_post.

5 workflows you can copy

Two weeks of daily Threads tips

A good first task: small, visible, and easy to check in the calendar.

Schedule a daily product tip on Threads at 12:00 Europe/Berlin for the
next 14 days, starting tomorrow. Our product is a time-tracking app for
freelancers. Each tip: one concrete action, under 400 characters, no
hashtags. Validate the batch before scheduling.

What Hermes does: list_accounts to find your Threads account, get_platform_rules for the 500-character limit, create_posts_bulk with validate_only=true, then the real call. You get something like: "Scheduled 14 Threads posts, one per day at 12:00, starting tomorrow. Each one is under 500 characters."

Turn one article into LinkedIn drafts

Use this when someone needs to approve copy before it goes out.

Read https://example.com/blog/pricing-lessons and draft three LinkedIn
posts from it, each built around a different lesson. First person,
founder voice, 120 to 200 words, end with a question. Save them as
drafts. Don't schedule anything.

What Hermes does: reads the article, then three create_post calls saved as drafts. They appear under Drafts in PostAxis, where a teammate can edit and schedule them.

Research the week, then post

Hermes works well on multi-step goals like this one.

Find three news stories from this week about remote work policy. For
each, schedule a LinkedIn post with our take as a hiring platform:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 America/Toronto. Tell me the
sources when you're done.

What Hermes does: researches with whatever browsing or search tools you've given it, writes the posts and schedules each with create_post.

Put a photo out tonight

PostAxis doesn't generate images, but it will take ones you already have.

Here's today's product shot: https://example.com/img/desk-lamp.jpg
Post it to Instagram and Threads at 18:00 Europe/London with a two-line
caption and no more than three hashtags.

What Hermes does: upload_media_from_url to pull the image into your PostAxis media library, then one create_post targeting both accounts. Instagram requires media, so the image is what makes this post valid there. For a file on your own machine, Hermes can call create_upload_link instead and give you a one-time upload link.

What failed this week?

Run this every Friday, or wrap it in whatever scheduler you already use to start Hermes tasks.

What failed to publish this week across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube?
Show the error for each. Reschedule the ones that just need another try
for tomorrow at 10:00 UTC, and leave media problems for me.

What Hermes does: list_posts filtered by status and dates, get_post for the per-network error, update_post to move the time.

Network limits Hermes Agent works within

Every post is checked against these rules before PostAxis saves it. If something doesn't fit, Hermes gets a clear error and can fix it in the same run.

NetworkCaption limitMedia rules
Threads500 charactersOptional; up to 10 images or one video
LinkedIn3,000 charactersOptional; up to 9 images or one video
Instagram2,200 charactersRequired; professional account, 1 to 10 images or one video (Reel)
TikTok2,200 charactersRequired; photo posts JPEG or WebP only
YouTube5,000 charactersExactly one video (Shorts); title up to 100 characters
X (Twitter)280 charactersOptional; up to 4 images or one video

Video must be MP4 or MOV, 3 to 300 seconds, in 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4 or 1:1. One video per post, and no mixing images with video.

Tips for better posts

  • Validate first. For any batch, say "validate first". create_posts_bulk with validate_only=true checks everything and saves nothing.
  • Say the timezone. "12:00 Europe/Berlin", not "noon". Otherwise Hermes uses whatever timezone it was told, or UTC.
  • Drafts while you calibrate. Your first few runs should end in drafts. Once the output sounds like you, switch to scheduling.
  • Put your voice in its instructions. Add a short brand brief to Hermes's system prompt or persistent instructions (wherever your setup keeps them): tone, banned phrases, hashtag rules, links to always use.
  • Pick a capable model. Bulk scheduling involves structured tool calls with many fields. Models that are reliable at tool use make fewer malformed requests.
  • Respect the cap. PostAxis accepts up to 300 posts per 24 hours per account through MCP and up to 50 posts per bulk call. If an autonomous loop misbehaves, that's where it stops.

Troubleshooting

The PostAxis tools don't appear. Check the block is inside your existing mcpServers list (not a second one), that the type is http, and restart Hermes.

No OAuth prompt, or 401 Unauthorized. The sign-in expired or was revoked. Restart Hermes to trigger the sign-in again. On a headless machine with no browser, use an API key instead (needs the API add-on) with the header Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY.

Hermes says no accounts are connected. Connect at least one account under Accounts in PostAxis. If you have several workspaces, tell it which one: "use my Acme workspace".

A post was rejected before saving. The error names the rule: caption length, media count, video length or format. Ask Hermes to fix it and retry.

You want to cut it off. In PostAxis open Settings → API keys and revoke Hermes under Connected agents. Access stops immediately.

FAQ

Can Hermes Agent post to social media?

Yes. With the PostAxis MCP server added, it can draft, schedule and publish on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, X, LinkedIn, Facebook Pages, Threads and Telegram channels.

Can Hermes Agent schedule 30 days of posts at once?

Yes. It can send up to 50 posts in one bulk call. Ask it to validate first so PostAxis checks every post without saving, and review the plan before it's scheduled.

Can Hermes Agent post images and videos?

Yes, media you already have. It can pass PostAxis a public link to an image or video, or request a one-time upload link for a file on your computer. PostAxis checks size, format and count for each network.

Does the same config work in other agents?

Yes. Any MCP client that supports remote Streamable HTTP servers can use the same block.

Is it free?

MCP access with OAuth is included in every PostAxis plan, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Hermes Agent itself is open source; you pay for whatever model you run it with.

The config block is on the Hermes Agent page, and the PostAxis MCP reference documents every tool and parameter. For an overview of all supported agents, read the complete guide to AI agents for social media. If you'd rather trigger posting from workflows than goals, see n8n AI agent social media automation, or use the same block in other tools with connecting any MCP client to a social media scheduler.
